Under current law, Lakewood public schools are required to provide transportation for approximately 17,000 private school students. For students whose busing costs are too expensive (above $884), State law allows the district to provide parents of those students with aid (currently $884) instead of transportation. S-2049 (Singer)/A-3652 (Rible, Kean) would direct the Lakewood school district, which is already underfunded in the current year by almost $5 million, to overpay a consortium of private schools to bus private school students.
